Dave Muir is a published surf and lifestyle photographer who has worked with not only some of the UK's best surfers but also has an impressive client list. Dave also runs Sennen Surfing Centre and is one of the UK's most experienced surfing coaches. His work is abstract yet representational, cool but inviting, and most importantly its breathtakingly beautiful. Dave's appreciation of the ocean runs deep and he is currently working on a documentary, entitled A Plastic Wave, to increase awareness of the plastic pollution in our oceans.
We caught up with Dave this week before the release of his photos for a quick Q&A.
NCA: WHAT ARE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSENTIALS?
I have a few. My SPL housing and 7D have been my workhorse for the last 5 years. Recently my Sony RX100 for anything off the hip.
My Hasselblad 500c is what I’d use everyday if I could.

NCA: WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO PICK UP A CAMERA, AND THEN TAKE IT INTO THE WATER?
I wouldn’t say inspired. More born from desperation. When you see something that you wish you could see again. In the water this became more apparent, mainly out of countless hours surfing with the best surfers in west Cornwall.
They allowed me to make a go of it.
NCA: WHAT's YOUR FAVORITE PHOTO FROM THE COLLECTION?
Picking a favourite is hard.
I love that magical light you get in the afternoon at home. FLASH depicts that best for me. That day is why I enjoy floating in the ocean.
NCA: WHAT OTHER PROJECTS HAVE YOU GOT GOING ON AT THE MOMENT?
So I have a little bit on....
I'm working on some personal projects that include photos of Mike Lay (surfer and Reef ambassador). He's been keeping me going this Winter. I have some gold. I also have a seagull project. It sounds strange but I seem to be bothered by one every time I go surfing.
My main project though has been A Plastic Wave. A documentary I’m presenting highlighting the issues of Plastic in our ocean. How it will affect our home and our future. I’m hoping to make a film that people can relate to. It’s been a real journey so far.
